Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Brainspotting (BSP)

EMDR and Brainspotting are both respected mind/body based therapies that help individuals reprocess distressing memories and to develop more adaptive coping mechanisms.  These are highly effective therapies when used as a primary therapy or when combined with traditional talk therapies.

EMDR

This is a well-researched process that that includes having clients recall distressing images while receiving one of several types of bilateral sensory input, including side-to-side eye movements.

Brainspotting (BSP)

Therapists aim to help people position their eyes in a way that enables them to access traumatic memories.  Research shows that points in the visual field correspond to parts of the brain.  A Brain spot is an eye position that tends to activate a traumatic memory or painful emotion. It allows therapists to access emotions on a deeper level and to target the physical effects of trauma that is “stored” in the body and can alter the way the brain works.
